Sources: Population and area are from The New York Times Almanac 2002. GNP figures and rankings, which are for 1999, are taken from the World Bank's World Development Report 2000/2001, pp. 274-75.
Area: Slovenia is the size of Massachusetts; Macedonia is a little smaller than Vermont; Romania and the former Yugoslavia are about the size of Wyoming. Ukraine is somewhat smaller and Turkey somewhat larger than Texas.
Per capita GNP: Calculated at "purchasing power parity": that is, the figures have been adjusted to take account of the lower cost of living in poorer countries and distorted exchange rates. (Without adjustment Moldova's per capita GNP converts as $370.) The number in parentheses is the country's world ranking.
For comparison, Austria is among the wealthy members of the European Union in per capita terms, while Greece is among the least wealthy. On pp. 334-35 of its report the World Bank classifies countries by per capita GNP at PPP, including some for which it gives no GNP. Bosnia and rump Yugoslavia rank as "Lower Middle", like Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. Cyprus (presumably the Greek Republic of Cyprus) ranks as "High", like Greece, Slovenia and Austria.
